Early on November 29. 1864, troops led by Colonel John Chivington attacked peacefully encamped Arapaho and Cheyenne tribal members. The slaughter of more than 200 people, mostly women, children and the elderly, is recounted at a remote Great Plains site that also honors the atrocity’s historic importance to Native Americans.
