A marsh-laced chain in Tangier Sound, this community was shaped by centuries of isolation. It was originally charted by Captain John Smith in 1608 and today it is Maryland’s only inhabited offshore island reachable exclusively by boat. The island’s three villages: Ewell, Tylerton, and Rhodes Point, are sewn together by docks and crab shanties. Here, watermen culture still defines the rhythms of daily life.
