This ocean was only officially recognized in 2021. It has the planet’s youngest seafloor, absorbs more heat than any other ocean, and is the only ocean to completely encircle a continent. It drives the Antarctic Circumpolar Current – the strongest on Earth – which greatly influences global climate. It is also home to species found nowhere else, like emperor penguins and Weddell seals.
