From December 31, 1862, to January 3, 1863, more than 81,000 Union and Confederate soldiers fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Almost a third became casualties during the struggle, which was a Northern victory. Road tour stops include the earthen Fortress Rosecrans, a national cemetery and the Hazen Brigade Monument, which remains in its original 1863 battlefield location.
