The Homestead Act of 1868 provided a way to distribute public land to private citizens to help settle the vast American West after the Civil War. Oscar Swett claimed his homestead in 1909, where he, his wife and nine children survived using minimal modern technology and creative adaptation, including digging a root cellar to preserve food.
