The 18th-century Annaberg Plantation was one of the more than two dozen plantations on the island of St. John that went into decline after slavery was abolished in 1848. Annaberg produced sugar, rum and molasses. Its ruins are protected in Virgin Islands National Park, home to stunning white-sand beaches, forested hills and Caribbean Sea coral reefs.
