American operations in World War II’s Pacific theater relied on the firepower of a South Dakota-class battleship and a Gato-class submarine. The “Lucky A” USS Alabama, so nicknamed because none of her 2,500-member crew lost their lives aboard, sits today in Mobile, Alabama near the USS Drum, a submarine that sunk 15 Japanese ships and earned 12 battle stars for her exemplary conduct.
