The aircraft carrier participated in major Pacific Theater campaigns during World War II, but it is perhaps best known for its role in the recovery of the Apollo 11 and 12 astronauts and capsules after splashdown at the end of their missions. Visitors get up-close looks at vintage military aircraft, and some of the museum ship’s guided tours are led by veterans of the Hornet or other carriers.
