Built amid World War II and named after the original carrier, CV-2 USS Lexington, sunk in the Coral Sea, this Essex-style aircraft carrier joined the Fifth Fleet in Pearl Harbor. Serving 21 months in combat and contributing to most major battles in the Pacific, she set more records than any other carrier of her kind. Since 1992, the ship has been docked in Corpus Christi, where she operates as a national museum.
