A brutal Civil War campaign culminated in the surrender of Confederate forces on July 4, 1863, after Vicksburg had endured 47 days under siege. The critical victory assured Union control of the Mississippi River. Visitors take a self-guided road tour or hike a scenic battlefield that preserves cannons, fortifications, a national cemetery and hundreds of monuments. A gunboat also is on display.
