The Zambezi River plunges over a basalt fault line between Zambia and Zimbabwe, creating a curtain of water about 5,604 feet wide and up to 355 feet high. Known in Lozi as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke That Thunders,” its mist sustains rainforest and can be visible for miles during peak flow. UNESCO protects the land for its geology, intense gorges, and wildlife-rich river system.
