On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Union General U.S. Grant in the Appomattox Court House home of the Wilmer McLean family. Virginia, where many key Civil War and Revolutionary War battles were fought, also boasts a rich colonial history and was the birthplace of four of the first five presidents.
