Elk commonly are seen grazing in an area known for geothermal features called travertine terraces. These landforms are created as calcium carbonate dissolved in hot springwater flows to the surface and is deposited. The small community at Mammoth is home to a visitor center, tourist facilities and historic Fort Yellowstone.
