Mariposa Grove was the first piece of land set aside for protection in the United States. The Yosemite Land Grant Act signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 ensured this grove of sequoias and Yosemite Valley were preserved for future generations. The 209 foot Grizzly Giant is the oldest and most popular of the sequoias found in the grove.
