Inevitably yielding to the elements, Alaska’s boreal forests meet their end in Kobuk Valley. In their northern and western reaches, the boreal spruce, birch, poplar and aspen become stunted, falling victims to the short growing season, permafrost and desiccating winds. Soon, they disappear altogether as the forests give way to the vast arctic tundra.
