This Southeast Asian archipelago of more than 7,600 islands straddles the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” combining active volcanoes with coral reefs and mangrove coasts. Once a Spanish colony and later under U.S. direction, it gained full independence in the mid-twentieth century. Its population of over 110 million retains a blend of Iberian, American, and Austronesian cultural influences.
