Routinely used as the backdrop for western films, this Navajo Nation land of sandstone buttes and open spaces is many Americans’ ideal image of the West. Tourists peruse visitor center exhibits and tour the Valley Drive, a scenic 17-mile dirt route through this sacred terrain. Twice a year, photographers flock to capture the moment when the West Mitten’s shadow casts itself upon East Mitten Butte.
