In the 17th century, the French established the first European settlement along the Arkansas River. After serving as a trading post, military fort, frontier village, river port and briefly, the territorial capital, Arkansas Post faded into history. Visitors tour the town site, watch weapons demonstrations and keep an eye out for local armadillos.
