Accessible only by foot or by boat, this former U.S. Army fort’s sordid history is preserved in the island’s history museum. Built with slave labor with the intent to protect Pensacola Bay in the 1800s, it later became an Underground Railroad stop and a holding site for Chiricahua Apache captured during the Apache Wars.
