Named for Stephen T. Mather, the first director of the National Park Service (1917–1929), this South Rim viewpoint honors his legacy in protecting America’s national parks. Today, it is one of the park’s most popular and accessible overlooks offering dramatic sunrise and sunset views that illuminate nearly two billion years of geologic history.
