First lit in 1874, the lighthouse protected traffic on Chicago’s Lake Michigan approach, where several shipping disasters had occurred. The nearby keeper’s building houses a museum with exhibits that include the story of the Lady Elgin’s collision with another ship
in 1860, taking an estimated 400 lives. Seasonal guided tours take visitors up 141 steps to the top of the tower.
