Established after public outcry over uncontrolled logging and fires, The People’s Forest has grown to almost 800,000 acres and supports millions of visitors annually. The forest is home to New England’s highest peaks, popular ski resorts and snowmobile tracks, historic sites, and world-class hiking, including 160 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Every fall leaf-peepers flock to the Kancamagus Scenic Byway.
