This serpentine street is famous for its steep grade and eight tight switchbacks. It was redesigned in 1922 to improve early vehicle safety on what had become a perilous hill with a 27% incline. It now attracts thousands of visitors daily. Its charming and absurd geometry capture the city’s eccentric spirit. It has become fondly known to many as the “crookedest street in the world.”
