South Dakota’s largest city grew around the landmark that gave it its name: cascades of the Big Sioux River tumbling over 1.5-billion-year-old pink quartzite. Drawn by waterpower in 1856 and 1857, two land companies claimed sites beside the falls. Local quarries later shipped the distinctive stone across the Midwest. Today, the steel Arc of Dreams spans the river, representing a leap of faith.
