Planning a trip? Check out the Petroglyph National Monument website.
Petroglyphs dot the volcanic landscape of outer Albuquerque and tell the story of ancestral Puebloans and Spanish explorers. Dating 400-700 years in age, these etchings engraved in lava represent animals, plants, celestial objects and religious symbolism. Three trails at the base of ancient volcanic flows weave hikers in and out of canyons that contain no less than a combined one thousand petroglyphs.
