At 8,839 feet high, Half Dome is Yosemite’s seventh tallest peak. Formed by glacial carving and erosion, three sides of peak are smooth while the fourth side is sheer cliff face. Dominating the eastern side of the Yosemite Valley, it was first summited in 1875. Visitors today must first obtain a permit to hike to the top of the park’s most iconic peak.
