The rainbow studded Vernal Fall soaks hikers with cool spray and a reprieve from ascending a steep and often slippery granite staircase of more than 600 steps. Tracing the Merced River, the Mist Trail continues to meander to the top of Nevada Fall where it intersects a portion of the John Muir Trail 2,000 feet above its origin near Happy Isles.
