Chilly fog and rocky reefs made the stretch of sea along the San Mateo Coast dangerous to mariners. A series of shipwrecks led to the construction of a 115-foot-tall light atop a bluff in 1872. Listed today on the National Register of Historic Places, visitors can soak in views of the harbor and marine wildlife below, including whales and seals.
